Keeping a piece of Dutch maritime history alive – the SS Christiaan Brunnings
Damen Shiprepair Oranjewerf prides itself on its ability to repair and service all types of vessels, and that extends from the most modern ships to classics such as the Clipper Stad Amsterdam and the steam ship SS Christiaan Brunnings.
118 years old and still going strong…..
Launched in 1900 the SS Christiaan Brunnings, a 31-metre, steam driven, inland passenger transport with an icebreaker hull, was built for the Board of the Rijkswaterstaat and named after its founder, the famous 18th century Dutch hydraulic engineer. It served for 68 years before narrowly escaping being broken up and was instead handed over to the Nederlands Scheepvaartmuseum (Netherlands Maritime Museum), where it has now been based for 50 years. When it is not out on the water with sponsors, attending sail events or welcoming Sinterklaas (Santa Claus) each 5th of December, the Christiaan Brunnings can generally be found moored alongside one of the museum pontoons.

The vessel is funded by donations and is crewed and cared for by volunteers. It visits Oranjewerf almost every year for an inspection and maintenance. On its most recent visit to the yard in early 2018, it was pulled up onto the slipway and underwent a programme of works that included:
- Testing the integrity of the steam boiler.
- Cleaning and painting the underside of the hull.
- Blasting and repainting the fo’c’sle.
- Overhauling the valves.
- Replacing the anodes.
- Replacing the rubber on the bushes.
- Polishing the propeller.
Most significantly, some double plates were replaced following the SI inspection, which revealed degradation as a result of electrolysis.
The management and workforce of Damen Shiprepair Oranjewerf have enjoyed a long and happy relationship with the Christiaan Brunnings and its custodians, and is proud to be contributing towards keeping this piece of Dutch history afloat and sailing.
