TSHD 'Hein' returns to Damen Shipyards Harlingen for maintenance and special survey
Damen Shipyards Harlingen (DSHI) has completed a three-week contract for a special survey and associated maintenance works on the Hein, a 99-metre trailing suction hopper dredger built in 1979 and owned and operated by Van der Kamp International Dredging B.V.
All dredgers are highly susceptible to wear and tear due the abrasive nature of the sand, gravel and other materials that come on board and Hein is no exception. She is a regular visitor to receive the intensive and high-quality maintenance that is needed to keep her at maximum efficiency, much more so than conventional vessels such as cargo or passenger ships.
The team at DSHI undertook a wide range of repair and maintenance actions.
These included servicing the engines, pumps, valves and box coolers, and one of the vessel’s Azimuth thrusters was replaced with a serviced spare unit. The piping was also inspected and repaired where necessary and, as with all dredgers, replacing worn steelwork was an important element of the project.
For the survey the yard assisted with mandated activities that included thickness measurements, tank inspections and inspections of machinery and equipment. It also serviced the safety equipment including the lifeboats in line with the survey requirements. At the same time the owner arranged the servicing of the dredging equipment.
Finally, before returning to work, the decks were pressure-washed and repainted and the hull was also cleaned, blasted and received a fresh paint application.
"Thanks to excellent cooperation between the ship’s crew and our Damen personnel the project was a success,” said project manager Willem Starke. “Although the scope of work increased quite dramatically as the project progressed, DSHI was able to scale up to meet the challenge and so enable the vessel to leave the yard on time and fully operational."
