Asphalt tanker 'Elisabeth J' at Damen Shiprepair Harlingen for special survey and maintenance
In October 2019, the 4,232 GT asphalt tanker Elisabeth J spent two weeks at Damen Shiprepair Harlingen (DSHL) for a maintenance programme including its third special survey. The vessel is owned by Aannemersbedrijf Gebroeders van der Lee B.V. (Gebr. van der Lee), a well-known construction company and supplier of asphalt and bitumen.
Alongside the survey and its associated works the schedule included the WA-2 high pressure blasting of the hull including the flat bottom and its repainting in the owner’s livery. A number of repairs were also undertaken involving the outboard valves and checking play on both the rudder and the propeller shaft. The propeller shaft seal was also replaced.
The routine of an asphalt tanker typically involves multiple port calls in between refills with itineraries often being amended mid voyage. When the works became due Damen offered suitable docks at a range of different Damen locations - even including Curacao in the Caribbean – but none fitted in with Elisabeth J’s schedule until the week before the works began when a suitable interval opened up between deliveries. With DSHL having a dock available and able to arrange the equipment required on short notice, the owners selected it for the project.
The quick decision making was aided by the long relationship already developed between DSHL and Gebr. van der Lee. Last year the yard docked their dredgers Marinus G and Mette Maria, the latter built by Damen, along with one of their inland barges; Sjouwer.
Gebr. van der Lee has played a significant role in a number of civil engineering projects in the Netherlands in recent years. These include major maintenance works including track-wide replacement on major arterial roads, construction of the Moeraseiland Markermeer Pilot for Rijkswaterstaat, and major works for the new Flevokust transshipment port including building road access, a breakwater, a quay and part of the primary flood defence.
