Wind Farm Jack-Up comes to DSDu for spud can upgrade
In early 2018, Damen Shiprepair Dunkerque (DSDu) completed an eight-day upgrade project on A2SEA’s second-generation, purpose-built, 132-metre wind farm jack-up rig Sea Installer. The primary objective was the fitting of new spud cans – the shoes fitted to the bases of the vessel’s four columnar legs which take the weight of the rig when they are positioned on the seabed. These massive pieces of steelwork weighed 160 tonnes each and required the deployment of specialist logistics. These included the use of self-propelled modular transporters to move them into the dock and a 700-tonne crawler crane to lift them into position for fitting.
“The yard worked around the clock to ensure that everything was completed on time,” said Fabien Guillemot, commercial manager at DSDu.
“The logistics for the replacement of the spud cans required external resources, but at DSDu we have excellent access to the relevant specialist suppliers to enable the efficient completion of projects such as this.”
Additional steelworks and other maintenance
While Sea Installer was in the drydock, the client also took the opportunity to undertake additional preparations for the rig’s next contract; the installation of 42 Siemens 7MW wind turbines at the Rentel offshore wind farm off the coast of Ostend, Belgium. This required a substantial amount of steel work related to the installation and securing of equipment on deck including stairs, grillages and containers. At the same time, the bow thrusters were overhauled, the jetting system modified and the topsides paintwork redone in the livery of DEME, the new owner of A2SEA.
With the Sea Installer on her way, Torben Breyen, Vessel Superintendent at A2SEA, commented, “Prior to the docking we had several meetings and despite the short time available all the jobs were executed on time and with a satisfactory result.”
