‘Tridens’ refit and conversion is completed by Maaskant Shipyards
Maaskant Shipyards has completed its largest ever refurbishment job, the refit of ‘Tridens’ owned by government shipping company Rijksrederij.
Extensive work was required to transform ‘Tridens’ into a research and survey vessel and thorough analysis and calculations by Maaskant Shipyards were vital to a successful outcome.
The far-reaching work included adding a range of innovative applications, carrying out substantial alterations to the drop keel together with an extensive refit.
Manufacturing and positioning the trunk, into which the 3m keel is lowered took almost a month, followed by inserting a Simrad sonar and echo sounder within the keel itself.
Meticulous planning was essential before the conversion. This included detailed studies on board the Irish research ship Celtic Explorer which also has a drop keel and was delivered by Damen in 2003.
Damen cooperation is exceptional
“We’ve worked with Damen Maaskant Shipyards Stellendam over many years for maintenance, but this is the first time we’ve completed a refit of this scale and the first time we’ve installed a drop keel,” said Dirk Kuijt, Rijksrederij Technical Manager. “The cooperation with Damen has been exceptional. It was a very big project for us and we had a very tight schedule.”

The refit work included refurbishing cabins for the crew and an overhaul of the main engines, all propulsion equipment and the steering apparatus.
The stern gantry and winches were replaced and maintenance of the stern mast, booms, A-frame and the corners of the stern of ‘Tridens’ was carried out. In addition, a dedicated device was developed for safe hauling of otter boards.

Work on ‘Tridens’ was completed on schedule despite additions to the workscope during the project.
After the conversion, ’Tridens’ departed for survey trials to represent the Netherlands in a four-week joint European survey.
“We were all under a lot of pressure. I’m very pleased with how Damen completed the project according to plan,” added Mr Kuijt.
