RoPax Ferries at Damen Verolme Rotterdam – fast and convenient: 'Stena Transporter'
Damen Verolme Rotterdam (DVR) has longstanding relationships with a number of North Sea ferry operators based on its convenient location and its ability to turn around projects at high speed. One of these companies is Stena Line, based in the Hoek of Holland, which uses DVR for its bi-annual one-day dockings for its vessels as well as other, more extensive, stopovers. The one-day dockings involve rapid inspections of the hulls, rudders and propeller assemblies below the waterline to look for any damage or wear. These can take as little as one hour, but if works do turn out to be necessary than DVR can respond quickly to make good any defects in as short a time as possible.
In the first quarter of 2019, DVR received five RoPax visits of varying durations, one of which was the Stena Transporter.
The vessel measures 212 metres in length and with a gross tonnage of 33,690 tonnes, she has over 4,000 lane metres of freight capacity and space for 300 passengers.
She spent nine days at DVR in dry dock number five, where she underwent a special survey and had the blades of her bow thruster removed, maintained and reinstalled. The seals and liners on her tail shafts were at the same time also renewed while a number of small steel repairs were made and the anodes replaced. However the most visible indication of the time that Stena Transporter’s stay at DVR was the full external painting programme that she underwent, extending from the keel up to her funnels.
“She came out looking like a new ship,” said project manager Robbin Kok, “but we knew that even all the parts that weren’t so visible were in a first-rate condition and so she was ready to get back to her busy schedule.”
“Stena Line confidence in Damen is the result of many earlier visits. We are very happy with the excellent relationship between both companies. On the Damen repair yards are working professionals, that is what you see” said ship operations manager Peter Jacobs.
