New heavy-lift jack-up 'Apollo' visits Damen Shiprepair Dunkerque for major surgery
Valued client DEME Offshore returned to Damen Shiprepair Dunkerque (DSDu) in early 2019, this time with its heavy lift jack-up Apollo for a one-month conversion project that required major surgery to a vessel that had been delivered by the builder just the previous year. The complex contract involved the installation of a moon pool on the main deck, a major undertaking that involved the cutting of an opening right through the centre of the vessel from the main deck down through the engine stores and finally through the hull.
To achieve this without compromising the structural integrity of the 87.5-metre Apollo, the work was done in a strict sequence based on strength calculations of the ship’s structure so as to manage the weight distribution.
The technical demands combined with the limited time available required highly precise planning together with working around the clock in order to complete on time.
DSDu’s USP for jack-ups
The team at DSDu was able to meet the needs of the client by using a novel solution to reduce the time and cost required to do the work that few other yards can replicate. The complete scope of work was done with the vessel jacked-up alongside the quay! Manoeuvring the vessel alongside the quay and then jacking it up allowed the project to be conducted from a pontoon positioned directly beneath the hull, demonstrating that, for jack-ups, it is not always necessary to dry dock them for projects or mobilisations that require works below the waterline. The location of DSDU in the east port of Dunkerque, behind a series of locks that protect it from the open sea, ensures a near constant water level. This greatly simplifies operations of this type. The result was a fast, cost-effective and high-quality result for Apollo and DEME Offshore.
DEME, the parent of DEME Offshore, is a longstanding client of DSDu based on the yard’s ability to meet the requirements of its world-leading dredging fleet as well as its offshore capabilities. DSDu’s strategic location ensures minimum downtime for offshore operators active in the region. In June 2018, the 147-metre DEME Offshore heavy-lift jack-up Sea Installer spent eight days at DSDu for the fitting of new spud cans and other works.
