Damen Maaskant Shipyards Stellendam receives praise for engine and winch work on two fishing vessels
The two mussel dredgers ‘BRU-68 Spera in Deo’ and ‘YE-18 Johannes’ visited Damen Maaskant Shipyards Stellendam in January 2016 for engine replacement and installation of new winches.
Four weeks was allocated for the work to both of the vessels when they simultaneously visited the yard in early January.
‘BRU-68 Spera in Deo’
The old main engines were removed from ‘BRU-68’ and Damen Maaskant Shipyards Stellendam installed and commissioned two new Caterpillar C18 engines. In addition, a new electronic engine control was fitted.
Other tasks carried out to the vessel included installing new engine U-box coolers and repairing and servicing the fishing booms.
Engine trials
After the installations, engine trials were carried out in the Haringvliet North Sea inlet, monitored carefully by a representative from the Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT). The work was found to be fully compliant with the latest regulations.
The customer was very pleased with the new engines and the service provided by Damen Maaskant Shipyards Stellendam.
The project was carried out in close cooperation with the customer and there was excellent communication throughout, particularly on technical issues.
‘YE-18 Johannes’
The old winch on ‘YE-18’ was dismantled and a new base made ready for the installation of a replacement Maaskant M120 winch.
“The customer had a Maaskant winch about 20 years ago on another vessel and was very pleased with it so wanted a replacement,” said project manager Gerrie Maaskant.
In addition, the control systems were transferred to the new winch.
Winches
Damen Maaskant Shipyards Stellendam has been building winches since 1948 with standard winches held in stock to minimise vessel downtime.
The winches are designed and engineered by the shipyard to the highest offshore standards.
“Not very many companies make winches to such specifications,” said Mr Maaskant.
Custom-built winches can be fully optimised to clients’ requirements.
Repairs
Other tasks to 'YE-18' included repairs to the fishing booms and swifflepoints, general maintenance work, blasting and painting.
Sea trials were carried out and the customer was very satisfied.
“Work was completed on time thanks to the advanced planning that was carried out by Damen Maaskant Shipyards Stellendam,” said Mr Maaskant. “The customer praised all the personnel involved for being so well organised. He was very pleased.”
