Complete renovation of fishing vessel 'Willem van der Zwan'
The 'Willem van der Zwan' is one of the largest fishing vessels of the Dutch fleet that burnt out completely in 2007. A year later the vessel moored at Damen Shiprepair Vlissingen to be completely renovated. First all re-usable parts were removed, after which the demolition of the burnt top construction of the ship began.
Break down to build up
Before the re-building started, the vessel was dismantled, thoroughly cleaned and docked in the covered dry dock to remove accommodation, ship’s shell and decks. Various parts have been replaced, engines overhauled and a few weeks later the vessel left the dock to be finished alongside one of our yards quays. Then the fish processing equipment and accommodation was fitted up.
Repair activities
In the months that followed, we carried out a lot of repairs and renovations to deliver the 'Willem van der Zwan' as good as new:
- Hull, accommodation section with new interior and paintwork were renewed;
- Propeller shaft was fitted back into position;
- The new electrical winches were installed;
- Bridge equipment such as navigation was installed;
- Engine and fish factory was finalised before commissioning.
Sea trial and delivery
In the final phase of the rebuilding, the ship had a sea trial during which the manoeuvring tests were executed. The results of the tests were excellent and within 21 months Damen Shiprepair Vlissingen completed the rebuilding of the 'Willem van der Zwan'. On November 9th the ship left the yard to go fishing again.
